Problem:
A hazardous mine opening located in the Helena National Forest was highly visible and easily accessible by the public. This adit led to more extensive underground workings that posed a public safety issue.
Objective:
The objectives of the mitigation project were to prevent the public from accessing the workings, allow for authorized personnel to enter the workings thru a secured access, and to allow free access to a population of "Long Eared Bats".

Results:
Working off of pre-existing design and specifications, PHC-REC constructed a steel frame and gate structure and installed it within a 20 foot length of 54" diameter culvert. The culvert was then set in the adit and fill was placed around the culvert. The structure limited ingress and egress to the adit while allowing free access to the population of "Long Eared Bats". The hazardous opening was mitigated and final site grading blended in to match existing topography.
